Cape Town – Nederburg Winemaster’s The Art of Nosing and Tasting
On the 3rd & 4th of June, guests from the Mother City where schooled in the art of “nosing and tasting” thanks to the teams from Nederburg Wines and the Southern Sun The Cullinan Hotel.
Guests were welcomed with a glass of Nederburg’s Winemaster’s Reserve Riesling 2014 before being seated in the elegant dining room of the hotel’s stylish Peach Tree restaurant.
Tsogo Sun Sommelier, Georgio Meletiou, joined us to share his best wine tasting tips & tricks. He showed that a good wine tasting can be completed in just 4 easy steps:
- Check for clarity.
- Give the wine a quick swirl to release the aromas.
- Nose the wine – in other words, get your nose in there and give it a good sniff. Take note of the aromas you pick up.
- And then finally, taste the wine – ensuring that you take a big enough sip to completely cover your palate.
To put these news skills to the test, guests were then guided through a little taste experiment. Georgio showed what a dramatic impact different food pairings can make to the taste of the wine and vice versa. He showed for example how Sauvignon Blanc matches perfectly with any kind of acidity and how a Shiraz pairs beautifully with a lot of spice.
This taste test was followed by a decadent 3 course dinner carefully paired with Nederburg’s Winemaster’s Reserve wines.
For starters guests enjoyed French onion soup with toasted gruyere brioche paired with Nederburg’s Winemaster’s Reserve Chardonnay 2014. This was followed by braised pulled lamb shoulder with a pea puree, Pommes dauphinoise and a Parisienne vegetable casserole paired with Nederburg Winemaster’s Reserve Merlot 2013.
To end of the evening on a sweet note, dessert came in the form of poached pear with walnut Malva pudding, butterscotch sauce & honey comb dust paired with Nederburg Winemaster’s Reserve Noble Late Harvest 2012.
