Durbanville Hills Rhinofields – Johannesburg – October
There is something quite refreshing and classy wearing white to a special occasion or event. October is known to be the month where everyone seems to be getting into the happy party mode, because summer is just around the corner! “Stylishly Summer “ was our theme with Durbaville Hills Rhinofields wines which would be our last event of the year. We were very fortunate to have our event at 10 Bompas Boutique hotel in Craighall which added to the awesome vibe.
What I do enjoy about Summer in JHB the most, are those late afternoon thunderstorms as well as all the green trees . JHB really becomes a forest with a city buzz in Summer, the mini New York of Africa! Fortunately for us, the weather played along and no hectic thunderstorms took place. Two evenings of just over 50 people was the name of the game.
Guests were treated to a very zesty Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (Retail R50 pb) welcome drink, which is always consistent and is thoroughly enjoyed at our events. Once the guests had taken their seats, Wine maker Martin Moore, who is a well known name under the Come wine with us members, chatted to guests about the Durbanville Hills Rhinofields wines which most people aren’t familiar with. Durbanville Hills was quite fortunate in winning a few prizes this year, as well with their Rhinofields Chardonnay 2012, which guests also had the privilege of tasting, including the Rhinofields Pinotage, a Decanter worldwide winner.
10 Bompas Boutique hotel is a well known hotel in Johannesburg which has recently come under new ownership and is run like a tight ship with new manager, Amanda Murray. Chef Johannes who was previously with well known restaurant Cube, in JHB put together a fantastic three course menu for us on the evening, which our guests thoroughly enjoyed.
The first course was deboned roasted chicken wings served with mushroom thyme puree, crispy polenta cakes and panko crumbed camembert. Deliciously paired with the Durbanville Hills Rhino fields Chardonnay 2012. Our personal favourite of the evening!
For the main course we had Barbequed basted venison lion served with parsnip puree, morello cherries and mulled wine pear finished off with sauce poivrade. The pairing with the Durbanville Hills Pinotage 2012 fitted like a glove, and really complimented the peppery sauce with the meat.
Dessert was something a bit different with the beautiful Durbanville Hills Rhino fields Noble late harvest 2013. Apple Tart tatin served with honey ice cream finished off with salted caramel and honeycomb crumble. Wow that was a mouth full! All and all people had yet a fantastic time and we really look forward to be hosting more of our events next year in Cape Town, as well as Johannesburg.
